Reflections April 21, 2021

Today is EARTH DAY 2021!  This is our time to both celebrate the wonder that is our Earth and also commit to acting in ways that restore the health of the planet.  Check out our third weekly Sacred Ground message.  We are joining with congregations and faith communities across the country through Interfaith Power and Light’s work with faithclimateweek.org to education and inspire.

LEARN: This week’s video is A Compost Story narrated by Rosario Dawson and others.  Find out what would happen if we diverted the 60 billion pounds of mineral-rich food materials that go to landfills each year in the U.S. alone and turned them into compost. Watch it HERE

ACT:  Spend time in a garden or find a local food grower or farmers market to support local growers.

PRAY: May the waters flow peacefully; may the herbs and plants grow peacefully; may all the divine powers bring unto us peace. May the rain come down in the proper time, may the earth yield plenty of corn, may the country be free from war. The supreme Lord is peace. – hindu prayer

Reflections April 15, 2021

Through the month of April and beyond we will be celebrating Earth Day with Interfaith Power and Light’s “Sacred Ground” invitation to see how food systems contribute to injustice and to climate change, and how our faith tradition calls us to  respond through practical solutions.  Check out this week’s LEARN, PRAY, ACT climate justice plan.

LEARN: This week’s video is How to make your Garden Regenerative.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK6NrUmrV4A.  2 minutes on moving from sustainable gardens to regenerative “Climate Victory Gardens”.

PRAY: Say grace at your meals this week, specifically identifying each ingredient and giving thanks for the hands that grew it and the soil, air and water that nurtured it.

ACT:  Every Wednesday in April from 7-8:30am, we will have a table set up in the Giving Garden with postcards you can sign that ask the Secretary of Agriculture to support sustainable farming initiatives, specifically highlighting BIPOC farmers.  IPL will collect signed cards from around the country to deliver together to Washington D.C.

Reflections April 8, 2021

Earth Day is right  around the corner, Thursday, April 22nd!  Through the month of April and beyond we will be celebrating Earth Day with Interfaith Power and Light’s “Sacred Ground” invitation to see how food systems contribute to injustice and to climate change, and how our faith tradition calls us to  respond through practical solutions.  This week, we have three activities to introduce:

  2. LEARN: We are sharing the first in a series of informative videos.   This week’s video is Soil Solutions to Climate Problems narrated by Michael Pollan.  https://vimeo.com/centerforfoodsafety/soilsolutions.  It’s a quick 4min overview of the miracle of soil.
  3. PRAY: After watching the video, go outside and try to find a place with grass, dirt or soil.  Stand barefoot or put your hands flat on the ground.  Breathe deeply as you consider all the land, ground, soil, does for us.  Give thanks.
